Pete began dreaming of pedaling around the perimeter of the US to raise funds and awareness for cerebral palsy not long after his custom built 3 wheel recumbent bicycle was completed in 1991. As Pete’s older brother, I seemed the logical choice to help make Pete’s dream of biking come alive. Pete and I pedaled many miles together. First we embarked on modest exploratory trips around central Ohio and Kent. Soon he had me helping organize a 30 day 1000 mile tour around Ohio, sponsored by the Elks Clubs that raised $10,000 for CP research. Then he dragged me along to ride GOBA and TOSRV. Pete’s cycling passion ended in 1999 when an awful crash on GOBA robbed him of his ability to ride. But it did not quench his passion to raise CP research funds and awareness through the Pedal-with-Pete bike rides.
Pete’s passion for the Pedal-with-Pete cause hooked me as well and in 2002 I had the privilege of leading a talented and motivated team of volunteers to put on the first Central Ohio “Ride for Pete’s Sake!” fund raiser. I have gone from riding mostly at Pete’s side to becoming an avid bicyclist myself. And in the last several years, Pete’s original dream to cross the US by bicycle, has become my own.
With my wife Marcia’s encouragement to “Just go do it!”, I have signed up with America by Bicycle, (http://www.americabybicycle.com/CCC/) a touring company that specializes in arranging the logistics (route, carrying luggage, overnights etc.) for cross country tours. This grand adventure is scheduled to start from San Francisco on June 6, 2009 and then make its way east through Nevada, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and finally culminating in Portsmouth New Hampshire 52 days and 3850 miles later. Meanwhile, Cathy Levy is taking leadership for orchestrating the PwP Columbus volunteer team to put on the August 15 PwP Columbus ride.
Thanks so much for your concern for those afflicted by CP and for your partnership in Pete’s passion. Hoping to hear from you and perhaps to see on the road in July.
